iChromy, Chrome like web browsing on the iPad

June 1, 2011

Today I was watching some tweets go by and one caught my eye (no not Charlie Sheen #winning) but something similar. As some of you may know I am a huge Google apps and cloud advocate. One of the things that I love is the Google Chrome web browser, I love the apps, I love the synching, I love the tabbed browsing and it is also lightning fast. Today someone shared an app that is called iChromy, a web browser similar to Google Chrome, but on the iPad! The application is not 100% the same as chrome but it is very close. Lets take a look at a few of the features.

1. Tabbed Browsing, being a multi-tasker I find safari on the iPad a little counter intuitive. Its to much work to switch back and forth between different websites. With iChromy you have all of your tabs along the top and it disappears as you scroll down providing lots of screen real-estate. Also when you close the apps the tabs do save there locations so if you open it again.

2. Share to other web services easily: With iChromy you can share to many web services such as Diigo, Twitter, Facebook, Email as well as Instapaper. These services are great if you have classroom pages and you can instantly send information and links to your students. If you do not have an account like diigo setup you could create a bookmark and have all of the iPads signed up for the teacher account and you could create a “Reading List” for your students to go for classroom assignments or reading assignments.

3. Read Later: Read later allows you to do just that, read the website later when you do not have an internet connection. This will help if you are going somewhere that does not have an internet connection or if the iPad is going home with a student who does not have internet.

I do not think this is the end all be all browser for the iPad but with the tabs as well as sharing, I think this has some potential. I hope they add features and make the product better.

How could you use this in the classroom?
